Conditional Sentences (If-Clauses): All Four Types
Conditional sentence me ek if-clause (condition) aur ek main clause (result) hota hai. Har type ka apna fixed tense pattern hai — yahi exam test karta hai.
The four types
- Zero (universal truth): If + present, … present. If you heat ice, it melts.
- First (real future): If + present, … will + V1. If you study, you will pass.
- Second (unreal present): If + past, … would + V1. If I were rich, I would travel.
- Third (unreal past): If + had + V3, … would have + V3. If she had studied, she would have passed.
📝 Example"If I ___ (be) you, I would apologise." → second conditional → were (always "were" for all subjects here).
Key rules
Comma tab jab if-clause pehle ho. "Were" second conditional me har subject ke saath (I/he/she). "Will/would" if-clause me kabhi nahi aata.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
If you will study, you will pass.→ If you study, you will pass.If I would be rich…→ If I were rich…- Third conditional me dono jagah perfect: had + V3 … would have + V3.
⚡ Quick RevisionZero: present/present. First: present/will. Second: past/would (were). Third: had+V3/would have+V3. "will/would" if-clause me nahi.
