NEP 2020: Key Highlights for Teachers

By Dr Pankaj Tiwari · 6 min read

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) is a revolutionary shift in the Indian education system. For teaching aspirants (TGT, PGT, KVS), a solid understanding of NEP is crucial for both written exams and interviews.

1. The 5+3+3+4 Structure

The NEP replaces the traditional 10+2 system with a new 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to ages 3-18:

  • Foundational Stage (5 years): Ages 3-8 (Anganwadi/Preschool + Classes 1 & 2). Focus on play-based learning.
  • Preparatory Stage (3 years): Ages 8-11 (Classes 3-5). Introduction to light textbooks and interactive classroom learning.
  • Middle Stage (3 years): Ages 11-14 (Classes 6-8). Subject-based learning in sciences, mathematics, arts, and humanities.
  • Secondary Stage (4 years): Ages 14-18 (Classes 9-12). Multidisciplinary study, greater critical thinking, and student choice of subjects.

2. Multilingualism and the Power of Language

NEP strongly advocates mother tongue/local language as the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5 (preferably Grade 8). It promotes the "Three-Language Formula" with flexibility.

3. Competency-Based Education

The shift is from rote memorization to competency-based learning. Assessments will evaluate higher-order skills, such as analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity.

Interview Question

Q: "How will you implement NEP 2020 in your English classroom?"
A: Focus on experiential learning, integration of arts/sports into language teaching, and shifting assessments from rote grammar drills to communication-based tasks.
