Punctuation & Capitalization: The Rules Examiners Check

Punctuation chhota dikhta hai par editing, transformation aur writing me seedhe marks deta hai. Yahi galtiyan answer ko "kacha" bana deti hain.

1. The apostrophe (’)

  • Possession: the boy’s book (singular), the boys books (plural).
  • Contraction: it’s = it is; its = belonging to it (NO apostrophe).

2. Comma, semicolon, colon

  • Comma — lists & pauses: I bought pens, books and ink.
  • Semicolon (;) — joins two related full sentences: She studied hard; she passed.
  • Colon (:) — introduces a list/explanation: Bring three things: pen, pad, ID.
📝 ExamplePunctuate: its raining said ram“It’s raining,” said Ram.

3. Capital letters

Sentence start, proper nouns (names, places, days, months), "I", titles, languages/nationalities — sab capital. I study English on Monday.

  • its vs it’s — sabse common blunder.
  • Comma splice: She is smart, she works hard. → use a semicolon or "and".
  • Months/days/languages always capital: monday, englishMonday, English.
