Subject–Verb Agreement (Concord): Rules Students Miss
Subject–Verb Agreement, jise grammar mein Concord kehte hain, ek aisa topic hai jahan even good students silly marks lose kar dete hain. The basic idea is beautifully simple: a singular subject takes a singular verb, and a plural subject takes a plural verb. He writes / They write. Par exam-setters (PGT, TGT, KVS, UGC-NET) aise tricky subjects dete hain ki simple rule bhool jaata hai. Aaj hum un exact traps ko todenge jo students sabse zyada miss karte hain.
The Golden Rule and the "-s" Logic
Yaad rakho ek mazedaar trick: in the present tense, only one of the subject or the verb carries the -s. The boy runs (verb has -s, subject singular). The boys run (subject has -s, verb plain). Dono mein se ek -s — isse aapko instant clarity milegi. Ab aate hain un situations par jahan students phaste hain.
Trap 1: Words Between Subject and Verb
Setters deliberately put a phrase between the subject and verb to confuse you. The verb agrees with the real subject, not the nearest noun.
The quality of the answers was poor.
Trick: mentally bracket the phrase — The box [of chocolates] is… — and the right verb jumps out.
Trap 2: Either/Or, Neither/Nor & the Proximity Rule
With either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also, the verb agrees with the nearer subject (Proximity Rule).
- Neither the teacher nor the students were present. (nearer = students → plural)
- Neither the students nor the teacher was present. (nearer = teacher → singular)
Lekin both…and always takes a plural verb: Both Ram and Shyam are here.
Trap 3: Indefinite Pronouns & Collective Nouns
Words like each, every, either, neither, everyone, everybody, someone, nobody, anyone, one are always singular, even though they "feel" plural.
- Each of the boys has a pen. (not
have) - Everyone is ready. / Neither of them knows the answer.
Collective nouns (team, family, jury, government, committee) usually take a singular verb when acting as one unit: The team is winning. Par jab members alag-alag act karein, plural allowed hai: The jury were divided in their opinions.
Trap 4: Special Subjects That Look Plural (or Singular)
- Subjects joined by and referring to one idea/person take singular: Bread and butter is my breakfast. / The poet and singer is dead. (one person)
- Each/Every … and … takes singular: Every boy and girl was happy.
- Plural-looking nouns that are singular in sense: News, mathematics, physics, politics, measles — The news is good.
- Amounts/distances/time as a unit take singular: Ten kilometres is a long walk. / Fifty rupees is enough.
- A number of + plural verb; The number of + singular verb: A number of students are absent. vs The number of students is rising.
- One of + plural noun takes singular: One of my friends is a doctor.
Each of the students have a book.→ Each of the students has a book. The list of items are long.→ The list of items is long. (subject = list)Mathematics are difficult.→ Mathematics is difficult. One of my friend is here.→ One of my friends is here. (plural noun after one of)Neither of them are coming.→ Neither of them is coming.
Exam Strategy for Concord Questions
UGC-NET aur PGT mein concord ke questions aksar long sentences mein chhupe hote hain. Do this in three steps: (1) find the real subject (ignore phrases after of, with, along with, as well as, including — these don't change number); (2) decide singular ya plural; (3) match the verb. Note: with, along with, together with, as well as ke baad ka noun count nahi hota — The captain, along with his players, was honoured.
- Verb agrees with the subject, not the noun nearest to it (in of-phrases).
- Each, every, everyone, neither, either, one of → singular.
- Either…or / neither…nor → verb agrees with the nearer subject.
- Both…and → always plural.
- With, as well as, along with, including → ignore; don't change the verb.
- News, mathematics, physics + amounts/distances as a unit → singular.
- A number of → plural; The number of → singular.
Concord is pure marks for the alert student — ek baar ye traps pakad liye, toh aap inhe blindfolded solve karoge. Practice karo, revise karo, aur apne selection ki taraf ek aur kadam badhao. Best of luck! 🎓
